Risk Management & Duty of Care

Outdoor Adventure has an outstanding 27-year proven track record of the highest standards of helath and safety. We have an effective, up to date Health and Safety management system and in our initial meeting with tutors we set up and agree the shared duty of care responsibilities of 24 hour supervision and clear lines of communication. The advantage of our small Centre is that tutors have quick and easy contact with the Chief Instructor and Managing Director.

All of our activities are run to normal operating procedures with emergency action plans in place. These are reviewed continually. We involve students in the managing of risk, giving them valuable experience and enabling them to take greater responsibility for their own and others safety. We set clear ground rules for behaviour and out of bounds areas at the centre which have to be fully understood and agreed to on the first day. This helps the week run smoothly and allows an adult approach and relationship to develop.

As well as the guidelines of AALA and the National Governing Bodies, we work with the recommendations of The Aspects of Good Practise in Outdoor Education (Ofsted) and The Health and Safety of Pupils on Educational visits (DFEE) publications.

Outdoor Adventure turned out to be the best choice we could have made. The first-rate feature is its staff. They are highly flexible and adaptable. I cannot praise them enough for being so friendly, enthusiastic and supportive towards myself and the students.

Our Instructors

This is one of our major strengths. The instructors are highly qualified and have a wealth of experience working with young people. They understand the different learning styles of students and adapt their sessions and coaching accordingly to ensure everyone can experience success. They are committed to the outdoor industry and enjoy what they do. Highly motivated with excellent people skills they know how to bring out the best from your students. They quickly gain a rapport and create an environment of mutual trust and respect.

Secure Centre Policy and Child protection

Our staff team are fully vetted, CRB checked and trained in child protection. A duty instructor fully qualified in first aid, remains on-site and on call throughout the night period. We also have other members of live in staff to assist in situations if necessary. The Centre gates and all external doors are locked at the end of the day and all windows have restrictors. Security on external doors is managed by a coded locking system which is changed every week. Teachers have master keys to all the rooms.

Centre Size, Sole Occupancy and Location

We cater for up to 60 pupils within the Centre and we also have a camping facility on-site which enables us to increase this to 84 for larger groups. Sole occupancy can be arranged for groups which has many advantages to the pupils, teachers and Centre staff. The location of the Centre is spectacular overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and set within an Area of European Conservation and Site of Special Scientific Interest. It has its own 10 acres of grounds and is away from towns or other distractions. However Bude is only 4 miles away. The activity locations are either in close walking distance to the Centre or a short minibus ride away. The furthest location is just a 10 minute drive.

Commited to the environment

Comitment to the Environment

John Muir TrustOutdoor Adventure is environmentally aware and pro-active. We are a provider together with the John Muir Environmental Award and are on our way to becoming an Eco Centre. We work closely with English Nature, The National Trust, The Heritage Coast, The Forestry Commission and The Marine Conservation Society.
Our team pass on their knowledge of the environment to your pupils and the John Muir philosophy of wild places - Discover Explore, Conserve and Share. We regularly monitor all of our activity locations to ensure our usage is not having any negative environmental impact. By taking this approach we can enjoy these amazing places with our guests without spoiling them for others. For the benefit of everyone, it is essential that everything we do as a company is sustainable.
