The purpose was to bring the first year students out of themselves and to develop team working and motivational skills. You achieved both of these in an outstanding fashion and ensured our visit was so enjoyable and rewarding.
A fun and powerful way to help pupils develop the skills to succeed in life
This is an area in which Outdoor Adventure has a wealth of knowledge and experience and our staff understand how to spot and use the moments that arise in these sessions to help pupils develop their people and leadership skills.
We look at what makes someone a good communicator and put active listening to the test! Pupils become aware that everyone’s opinion and input matters. They are encouraged to look for and value the strengths in others and respect each others differences.
We look at the different leadership styles and discuss the vital ingredients that make up a true team and how to be positive and enthusiastic about solving problems. After the sessions we engage the pupils in fun and active reviews where they reflect and think about what they have learned about themselves and others, as well as how they can benefit from this knowledge back at school and in other areas of their life.
It is very rewarding for teachers to watch individuals succeed and grow in confidence throughout the session.
This type of activity is particularly effective in addressing many Key Stage 2-4 curriculum requirements such as key skills, PGSE work and citizenship.
As a result of the trust and team spirit being built throughout the week the relationships between the pupils and with their teachers often improves immeasurably.

A fantastic opportunity for pupils to experience a totally new water sport. Surfing is very unique in that even in the early stages of learning it is extremely exhilarating. However it is a great lesson in perseverance if you want the thrill of standing up! In this activity pupils also gain respect for the ocean. Lessons are run at Widemouth Bay, a beautiful clean beach 5 minutes from the Centre with waves that are perfect to learn in.
This activity is especially suited to smaller children who can find a full sized surfboard hard to manage. It is great fun and easy to get the hang of, allowing pupils to start catching waves and experience success straight away! An incredibly versatile sport. It is a great way to explore our local waterways together with the opportunity to learn new techniques following the structured approach of the British Canoe Union coaching scheme. We kayak on the historic Bude Canal which meanders inland through marshes and nature reserves where Herons and Kingfishers watch us from the bank. This sport also lends itself to fun and interactive games and challenges.
This is a great teambuilding activity as pupils share a craft and experience all the challenges and special moments of having to really work together to master their canoe. The common goal is to journey inland with plenty of games and fun team exercises on the way. We canoe on the historic Bude Canal which meanders inland through marshes and nature reserves where Herons and Kingfishers watch us from the bank.
A truly engaging activity where pupils really start to learn about their personal strengths. A powerful exercise in trust and responsibility where pupils are given the opportunity to share control of the ropes backed up by the instructor while another member of their group climbs. Different routes are chosen allowing everyone to experience success on the rock face. All close to the Centre, the climbing locations are awe-inspiring with very unique examples of geology all around you.
This is an activity where many pupils really do confront their fears and operate outside their comfort zone. The personal rewards from this can be immense and the session is run in a way where no one fails. Overcoming their fears through an abseil can be a life changing experience for many pupils and the increase in their personal confidence dramatic. The success of this activity often relies on the support and encouragement of the rest of the group and is therefore a powerful teambuilding exercise. We have a large and small abseil depending on the age group, both are spectacular and within 5 minutes of the Centre.
A very rewarding and enjoyable sport for pupils of all ages. This activity is an activity with a less physical emphasis and allows different pupils to shine whilst still giving that feeling of personal challenge and mastery. It is a great way of developing dexterity, precision and self control - no one can hide the smile when they hit a gold. Archery takes place in the Centre grounds, firing your arrows towards the backdrop of the Atlantic Ocean!
Outdoor Adventure is lucky to be situated on a section of the North Cornwall Coast Path which is regarded as one of the most spectacular in the Southwest. A great bonding activity as a group with routes covering fairly flat terrain to challenging walking crossing breathtaking valleys with steep climbs. Some stretches are totally remote and in a true wilderness environment. Often below you will see dolphins, Peregrine falcons and if you are lucky maybe a basking shark! It is a great bonding activity to do as a group and there is lots of opportunity to descend down into the rugged coves beneath and explore. Our Instructors share their interest in the environment and educate the pupils in what surrounds them.
A very unusual activity and one which pupils are very unlikely to experience again! The group makes its way along the base of the sea cliffs over or under whatever comes their way. Picking their route through boulder fields, traversing across barnacle covered ledges into secret bays. The instructor will pick the route dependent on the groups abilities keeping it challenging and fun. An excellent team building activity where pupils are surrounded by stunning geology with every rock pool and rock ledge providing a delight for the marine biologist.
We have designed an excellent orienteering course that runs throughout the extensive grounds of our centre. It is set up in a way to be used by a wide range of abilities. It covers basic map reading skills to the more advanced skills of pacing and walking on a bearing. The course is made up of a 10 acre maze of paths, taking in our private beach and every time you punch your card you will be inspired by the spectacular views up and down this rugged stretch of coastline.
